The Truth – 24×36  is a  Classroom Studio Workshop designed especially by Blank Canvases to: engage students in visual analysis, personal reflection, and graphic designwith a focus on Canadian history.

Process: Students begin by exploring contemporary social justice posters, from the Black and Indigenous historical movements. Through collaborative discussion and visual analysis participants then extract and examine the principles of strong graphic layout and design.

Each student is given a sketchbook, to begin working on a poster of their own.  They are guided to focus on an issue of human equity that is important to them with thematic links to HOZA!’s 2018 production: Let the Drums Sound – Stories of Truth.

Product: The resulting product is a mixed media poster for display in the school or surrounding community.

Our Story: Of Bits and Pieces

Our Story: Of Bits and Pieces is a  Classroom Studio Workshop inspired by the quilts and quilters of Gee’s bend . This colourful and lively fabric art-making workshop has been designed especially by Shannon Brown Studio for participants to share and explore stories as they relate to self and community.

Process: Students begin by exploring the Gee’s Bend quilts before they begin work on their own individual pieces. The larger community story emerges through facilitated discussions and creative sharing experiences. Text, colourful fabrics, buttons, felt and – a personal piece of fabric from home – are used in the art-making process.

Product: Each quilt piece is important to the creation of the whole. The final artwork is a community classroom quilt which can be hung on display, and then taken apart again, so that personal fabric pieces can be brought home and enjoyed.
